Adaptive reuse and modest residential additions across the Hunter Valley. We design buildings that respect their history while quietly improving how you live.
Our Philosophy
Hartshorn Studio is a small architecture practice based in the Hunter Valley. We specialise in two things: giving old buildings new purpose, and adding to homes in ways that feel like they have always been there.
Every project begins with close observation. We study the existing fabric, the way light moves through a room, the way a structure settles into its landscape. Our additions are quiet interventions — modest in scale, generous in effect. We use materials that age gracefully: reclaimed timber, rammed earth, galvanised steel, off-form concrete.
Photography is central to our process. We document each stage not merely for records, but to understand. The camera reveals what the eye overlooks: the texture of a hundred-year-old wall, the geometry of a roofline against the sky, the moment a new room finally feels like home.
What We Do
Converting existing structures — farm sheds, old cottages, industrial buildings — into purposeful, liveable spaces. We preserve character while introducing comfort and longevity.
Thoughtful extensions and alterations to existing homes. Our additions are designed to read as part of the original building, not a statement tacked on.
Early-stage exploration of what is possible on your site. We assess constraints, test ideas, and develop a clear direction before committing to full documentation.
In-house documentation of projects at every stage. We also offer photography services to other practices and builders who value quiet, honest imagery.
